As we approach the end of semester 1 and enter into the exam period, we’d like to take the time to thank you for being a member and look back on the events we’ve held. Your support for this club, your contribution to our spaces and enthusiasm for Linux has meant we’ve been able to continually push for bigger and better events.

Thank you with Tux wearing a party hat.

We’d like to share just some of the highlights regarding the club throughout the semester:

  • A record number of students have joined Swinux since the SSA made it’s transition to Rubric. 85 students joined us this semester!

  • We’ve ran more than double the amount of events compared to Semester 2 of 2025!

  • Swinux debuted a new event, the FOSS Game Night, where members play open-source multiplayer games and explore their unique mechanics.

  • Swinux hosted the yt-dlp & FFmpeg Workshop, teaching students how to use command-line media tools primarily found in the Linux ecosystem.

Over the early December period, we rebuilt the Discord server, introducing an onboarding process and streamlining the roles and channels to make navigation better and topics easier to find and discuss.

In addition, we’ve continued our tradition of weekly in-person meetups joint with the Swinburne Cybersecurity Club. Also joining us is the newest CompSci club on the block, the Swinburne Programming Club, founded this semester. We hope those that attended found it a useful resource to socialise and get support with their projects.

We also relaunched our website, swinux.org, featuring an updated, more consistent design and better support for mobile devices. This better prepares us as we look to expand what content we host on the site and reduce the barrier to entry for new authors.

On the administrative side, we launched our Mission Statement & Code of Conduct, codifying and providing guidelines about the remit of the club and what activities it intends to hold. The committee also worked towards providing more documentation for future committee members, ensuring as smooth a transition as possible for the next election.

Looking forward to semester 2, we seek to remedy the relative lack of Workshops by conducing our first Introduction to Linux Workshop alongside other previous workshops hosted in 2025. The Introduction to Linux Workshop is ideal for students looking to enter the world of Linux, or learn more about the Operating System that’s breaking into the mainstream.

As we continue into 2026, we look to continue our in-semester weekly meetups alongside our FOSS Game Nights. Work continues on securing and conducting more in-depth and larger events, and we hope to have some show-stopper events for semester 2 for you to enjoy. We hope everyone has an excellent semester break and wish everyone the best outcome for their units and exams. Onwards and upwards to semester 2!
